Life goes on in nature during COVID-19

News > Our Patron and Board

While nothing seems certain these days, it is truly a blessing to be able to continue to watch nature go on like nothing has changed.

There is definitely a thing or two we can learn from her defiance in the face of adversity. While COVID-19 seems to be mainly an issue for humans, there are many other threats our native plants and animals must face on a regular basis.

During the COVID-19 pandemic the Conservation Ecology Centre hopes to continue as much of our research and conservation work as possible. For the most part, our team can do their work from home, or in remote areas of the Otways where they are in small, consistent teams and can keep an appropriate distance.

On site, we still have quolls, potoroos and sugar gliders to care for, including two newly arrived Eastern Quolls who we’re hoping will be able to keep us all entertained (stay tuned for more on that).

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the COVID-19 situation as it progresses, and adopting the advice from the Australian Government but, for the time being at least, life goes on out in the bush.

Unfortunately, due to the risk of viral transmission, we have had to cancel our community events, including this year’s Big Otway Tree Plant. We look forward to welcoming you back to Cape Otway for that great event in 2021.

If you need a break or require somewhere lovely to stay while you self-isolate – please get in touch. During the pandemic the Ecolodge will be available for long term, self catered, exclusive bookings. It’s the perfect place to hide away, with long private bushwalks and local produce packages delivered to your door.  Find out more here.

And finally, if you need something to look forward to when this is all over, we are now taking bookings for the Great Ocean Ecolodge for summer 2020/2021 and beyond.

Please do consider making an early booking now to help us through this difficult time. It is our absolute intention to keep all of our ecotourism and conservation team on board during this period and having future bookings will certainly help us in doing that.

For now, stay home, stay safe, and stay tuned for regular updates,

Kindest regards,
Lizzie Corke
